Music Lounge: Girls Guns & Glory

You may not often string these three little words together but next time you hear someone say Girls Guns GGG& Glory, in that order, listen up. GGG is a band of four with a unique flavor and sound. When you hear front man, song writer and guitar player Ward Hayden sing you’ll be surprised to find out that Ward grew up in Scituate and not south of the Mason Dixon line.

Ward and Girls Guns & Glory drummer Mike Calabrese joined us in the studio last week to talk about their roots, roots music and their upcoming show at the CNote in Hull.

Ward credits his mom to introducing him to country music as a child which is one part of the special mix of roots, folk and country that helps to make the Americana genre that GGG is known for. In fact the group is up for a Boston Music Award this year as the Best Americana act for 2009 and you can vote for them here!

GGG has three albums under their belt and their latest was recently re-released under a new label. You can hear tracks from Inverted Valentine on their website. Check out Temptation – it’s my favorite.

Ward’s a true story teller and you feel like you’re right there in the front seat of the car he’s driving on this emotional journey of love found and love lost. Powerful stuff.

The group will be performing in MA, NH & ME in the next few months, the closest show to the shore will be @ The Paradise in Boston in January. Take a listen on their website, their sound is just amazing.

Keep Well This Flu Season

tissue-boxOver the past few months we’ve been visited twice by Dr. Carol DeFranca, chiropractic orthopedist of Norwell Spine & Sports and clinical director of FirstLine Therapy, whose mission is to provide therapeutic health and wellness services to the community.

Last week Dr. Carol shared some very important tips to help boost your immune system – I’ve included a few highlights from our conversation below. But you should really come and hear Dr. Carol yourself – she’s an amazing wealth of knowledge and offers FREE monthly “living better” seminars @ the South Shore Natural Science Center. Her next seminar, on women’s health issues, is December 1 from 7-8pm at the Science Center.

Let’s talk about staying well this flu season which is really a multi-step process. It’s (hopefully) common knowledge that simple steps like washing your hands often will help prevent the spread of germs and keep you healthy. But it’s also important to remember to get plenty of rest, keep your stress level down and keep up with your exercise regiment.

*Keep your sugars to a minimum since eating or drinking around 8 tbs, roughly 2 cans of soda, can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill germs by up to 40%! And the immune-suppressing effects of sugar starts less than 30 minutes after ingesting sugar and lasts for up to 5 hours after.

*Limit alcohol intake as alcohol produces a nutrition deficiency, depriving the body of valuable immune-boosting nutrients.

*Load up on immune boosting foods:

- Vitamin C, in amla fruit, lemons, broccoli, orange, kiwi, among others, increases the production of infection-fighting white blood cells and antibodies.

- Prebiotics, in fruits like bananas, vegetables like mushrooms and nuts like almonds, help probiotics thrive when we eat them.

- Probiotics protect your intestinal lining which is important in nutrient absorption and production of vitamins and fatty acids, and help improve whole body immune responses  that kill viruses and bacteria. Probiotics are found in yogurt and fermented milk like kefir.

-My personal favorite Dr. Carol highlighted was tea, in particular green tea, which helps inhibit viral replication and enhances your bodies ability to recognize invading organisms.

There are many immune boosting foods out there like olives, mustard greens, avocado, flax seed, salmon and the list goes on. For more information come and check out one of Dr. Carol’s free seminars where she provides yummy and nutritious foods to help illustrate the connection between food and health.

Stan proves norwell house exists!

norwellhouse3For those of you who pass it everyday, no proof was needed. But the Norwell House really does exist, despite the fact that both Tiffanie & Lisa (who both live on the south shore) never heard of it? Stan did a drive by and took these photos. Nice going Stan!

Maybe the owners will call into the show sometime!

ferret legging & bro-in-law Bob

ferretOn our extreme show, you heard Stan describe the adventures of his brother-in-law Bob in the extreme Scottish sport of ferret legging. Shame on you all for thinking it wasn’t true! Yes Bob is actually Stan’s brother in law, and yes he’s actually volunteered to undergo ferret legging.  See it for yourself.

Thinking Bob set this whole thing up in his back yard and named it himself? Wrong again…here’s the official news article.

And if you’re brave enough to try it [with trained supervision of course], then you’ve earned yourself a spot on our show. call or email us and tell us how it all turned out.

Yikes! Don’t try this at home kids.

Virtual View of Norwell

jeffcorwinLast week’s show was all about Norwell and we had so many folks to talk to…it’s spilled over into this week. Who knew this little town could be so interesting?

And we rummaged online for sites with Norwell kudos!

  1. Heard of the site  FamousWhy? Like the name suggests you can look anyone up and get the skinny on their fame. And guess what famous person we found for Norwell? Jeff Corwin, animal extraordinaire and host of The Animal Planet.  Compete.com gives it an average of 437,000 visitors a month. And we give Jeff a “10″ for being such an adorable animal lover and a native Norwellian.
  2. Does the name Earl Cogswell sounds famous? not yet, but it could be. The Norwell resident turned inventor, when he built the first Tank Nanny. And we found him online. No more tipping propane tanks all summer long. (I usually wedge my between the middle backseat and the floor, then wrestle to set it free). This former Sullivan Tire manager made his invention a Norwell family affair!
  3. there are 1,100 meet-up groups within 25 miles of Norwell including the Dog hikers group, the knitters group and the past regression group. What’s a meet-up you say? It’s a group of folks like you and me, who come together around an interest (and businesses who see the commercial power), then socialize online about it and of course “meet-up”. You can create your own meet-up too.  It all happens at Meetup.com. Compete gives it an average of 2.9 million visitors a month. Geeez! Where have we all been?

Xtreme! On the South Shore

MM8Thought all the extreme fanatics lived in Florida? Nope! We’ve got a crew of Xtremers living right here on the south shore.

Tonight we’ve got four of them in the studio – Mike Marsh, wakeboarder gone pro-circuit (pictured left), Anthony Geraci, NETRA offroad dirt bike champion 3 years (04,05,06), Jarrod O’Leary who does crazy motorcycle stunts (yeah, the big heavy ones!) and Jon Basile who surfs year round (even in -10degree weather).

These Adrenalin junkies are serious athletes (kids don’t try this at home!). They all do multiple sports too — triathlons, boogie boarding, windsurfing, skateboarding…you name it, they do it! And if we had asked… they would have packed the studio with twenty or thirty more  stunt riding, extreme surfing, dirt bike riding, wakeboarding friends…we’re sure of it!

Of course, as crazy as these daredevils are…we found a few extreme sports that you’ve probably never heard of and maybe wish you hadn’t.

That part comes later on The Virtual View:

1. Stunt Pogo.

Extreme_pogo_xlarge

This is not your father’s pogo stick. The “flybar”, a super springy pogo stick, can launch people seven feet in the air. Stunt pogoing has it’s own brand of tricks and incorporates styles from BMX and skateboarding, just without the cool factor. Check out this video from the NYC street games and you might be so impressed, youmight go out and buy a pogo stick.

2. Dirt Surfing

Dirt surfing is a board sport where riders coast along an inline board over roads, mountains, grass and anything else they want. The bigger wheels work on more terrains and some disciplines attach a kite to the board and take it to the next level – wingsurfing.  Watch this video
